9/26/2024 10:15:00 PM

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey program dominated MSU-Denver 7-2 in their season opener Thursday night.

The Argos (1-0) scored first when on the Powerplay midway through the first period freshman Jamal Shaw's shot from the point was blocked away by the goaltender, but Daniel Tainton corralled the loose puck and found the back of the net to put UP ahead 1-0.

A few minutes later the Argos scored again when Kage Yellowfly found Kaden Bolter on the two-on-one break to put UP ahead by two.

With five minutes left in the first period the Argos extended their lead to three when Fabian Vik found Jamal Kalaf on the breakaway to make it 3-0.

The Argos continued their momentum into the second period when Belanger intercepted a Roadrunner pass and found junior Colby Friedrich in front of the net to make it 4-0.

With under a minute left in the second period the Argos scored another power play goal when Kaleb West put it in front of the net and Vik tipped it past the goaltender for his first goal as an Argo.

The Roadrunners would add a pair of goals to cut the lead to three, but goals from Belanger and Tainton secured the 7-2 victory for the Argos.

The Argos will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 27 when they host Colorado State. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at the Great Falls Ice Plex.
