MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey program defeated #9 University of Montana 3-2 Saturday night.
In a back and forth contest each team had powerplay opportunities in the first two periods but neither team was able to push a goal across as UP and Montana went into the break tied at zero.
The Argos (19-8) broke through first scoring the opening goal of the game in the third period when
Adam Husli passed the puck from behind the net to
Jamal Kalaf who chipped it past the goaltender.
UP had another chance a few minutes later when shorthanded Husli beat the Grizzlies to the puck and found Kalaf but his sliding shot was stopped by the goaltender.
The Argos continued their momentum extending their lead to two when on the powerplay
Jamal Shaw sent puck in front of the net that was tipped by
Daniel Tainton into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Grizzlies would add a goal with two minutes left to make it a one-goal game but a minute later
Jamal Kalaf added an empty net goal to put UP ahead 3-1.
Despite the Grizzlies adding a goal with 27 seconds remaining, the Argos defense stood tall as UP defeated the University of Montana 3-2.Â
The Argos will be back in action Friday, Jan. 31 when they host Williston State College for senior night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
