DENVER, Colo. – The University of Providence hockey program fell to the University of Denver 5-3 Thursday night.
The Argos (0-1) scored the first goal of the season when a pass from behind the net from freshman
Logan Todd found sophomore
William Clark in the slot and his wrist shot beat the Pioneers (1-0) goaltender to put UP in front 1-0.
Two minutes later the University of Denver answered with a shorthanded breakaway goal to tie the opening game of the season with 14 minutes remaining in the first period.
Both teams had power-play opportunities in the rest of the first period, but neither side could find a go-ahead goal as the Argos went into the break tied at one.
The second period was back-and-forth until with just over two minutes remaining the Pioneers added a power-play goal to take a 2-1 edge.
The Argos had a pair of chances over the final two minutes but were unable to find the back of the net as UP went into the third period trailing 2-1.
Two minutes into the third period the Argos found the equalizer when on the two-one-one break sophomore
William Osika sent the puck across the ice to senior
Nicholas Demchuk whose one-timer beat the Pioneer goaltender to tie the game at two.
The Pioneers added a goal just over a minute later, but the Argos would not go away when a cross-crease pass from senior
Adam Husli found sophomore
Darnell Glasgo in the slot and his one-timer trickled over the goaltender's glove to tie the game at three.
The Pioneers responded with a goal just under a minute later, and despite late pressure from the Argos, Denver added an empty net goal down the stretch as UP fell in the season opener 5-3.
The Argos will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 26 when they head to Westminster, Colo. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00p.m. versus MSU-Denver at the Promenade Ice Center. Â
