HELENA, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey program defeated #3 Montana State University 3-3 (1-0) in a shootout to win the Montana Cup Saturday night.
The Bobcats (19-9) scored the first goal of the contest but the Argos (13-6-2) answered a few minutes later when senior
Fabian Vik found junior
Chavez Constant who chipped it into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
Neither side could break the tie until the Bobcats added a power-play goal with five and a half minutes remaining in the second period to give Montana State a 2-1 lead.
Following a few chances by both teams the Argos found the equalizer six minutes into the third period when a wrist shot from junior
Zach Fulton found the back of the net to tie the game at two.
The Argos continued their momentum when senior
Colby Friedrich picked off the Bobcats pass and buried the breakaway goal to put UP ahead 3-2 with seven minutes remaining.
Montana State tied the game at three with just over three minutes left and despite a few chances for both sides, neither could find the go-ahead goal as UP went into overtime tied at three.
The Argos had a pair of chances in overtime but neither side could find the back of the net as the game headed to a shootout tied at three.
Both teams missed their first three attempts in the shootout but on the Argos fourth shot sophomore
Kage Yellowfly beat the goaltender and freshman
Tucker Bayly stood strong blocking off all four shots as UP defeated #3 Montana State 3-3 (1-0).
The Argos will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 when they host #3 Montana State for a rematch. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (MST) in Great Falls, Mont.
