Guzman Scores Equalizer as Lady Argos Tie Once Again

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Lady Argos continue their overtime trend, playing to their fourth tie this season in a 1-1 match against conference opponent Northwest University.

The UGF defense took a few minutes to get into the game and those few minutes, in a way, were the most important of the game. Less than two minutes into the game, Gabriela Pereira De Andrade drove down the right sideline and put a cross into the UGF six-yard box. That cross found teammate Kortney Hudak at the far post and she put the ball into the opposite side of the net.

That early deficit woke up the rest of the Lady Argos and the remainder of the half saw them generate a number of scoring chances. Substitutes Jessica Watts and Ashley Klepec added energy to the UGF offense with Watts aggressively running to long balls down the field and Klepac attacking down the wing.

The Lady Argos maintain most of the possession in the first 45 minutes and outshot the Eagles 7-2 in the first half. Northwest did generate three corner kicks, none of which created a quality scoring chance. UGF keeper Kyra Dorvall faced no shots on goal after the first score.

The second half was more evenly played, with NU focused on stopping UGF's deep passes and the Argos burying the Eagles attack into the corners and out of the middle.

In the 75th minute one of Great Fall's long crosses finally found its mark. Freshman midfielder Sydney Knieriem sent a ball from near the right sideline into the far side of the box about 14 yards out. From there, sophomore Alejandra Guzman outran both a defender and the oncoming keeper to the ball, touched it past the goalie, and found the open net.

With yet another overtime looming, the Argos desperately tried to finish the game in regulation. Two headers from sophomore forward Madison Quinn threatened to end the deadlock but to no avail.

Having finished all three of their previous overtime games without allowing or creating a game winning goal, history suggested exactly what happened next.  In the final ten minute period UGF got off four shots, two of which were on net. Perhaps the best chance came from a cross by sophomore midfielder Sandralee DeVille that flew across the NU net and over the keeper but couldn't find the net or another Argo.

UGF finished with 16 shots to NU's 8 and put two more shots on goal. Dorvall finished with four saves and defender Ashley Todd stopped a slew of Eagle counterattacks in the second half and overtime.

The tie, the second straight for UGF, gives the Lady Argos as many draws as victories with a record of 4-3-4 (1-3-3). They'll look to change that with a win over Evergreen State College on October 17 at 1:30 p.m.
