ASHLAND, Ore. – An early goal from Alejandra Guzman wasn't enough to give UGF women's soccer a win that would've clinched their spot in the conference playoffs. The Lady Argos instead went into overtime again, but lost 2-1 to Southern Oregon University in extra time.
Guzman scored her seventh goal of the season in the ninth minute, again showing her prowess in the air. The sophomore got her head on a Lauren Ozdowski free kick to put UGF up 1-0. The assist was Ozdowski's fifth of the year.
UGF's goal was the team's only shot of the first half and the Lady Argos spent a majority of game packing in and trying to defend their lead. Southern Oregon got off three shots in the first 45 minutes with UGF keeper Kyra Dorvall saving three.
Despite Dorvall's best efforts, the Raiders evened the score in the 54th minute. The sophomore keeper finished regulation with seven saves and added another in overtime.
The Lady Argo's overtime history of five ties in five previous overtime games suggested another tie, but SOU bucked the trend in the 96th minute.
Guzman finished with two of the Lady Argo's three shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Serafina Robles had the other for UGF.
The loss costs UGF points that would potentially have sealed their spot in the Frontier Conference playoffs. They will get the chance to earn those much needed points in their final regular season game, a rescheduled match against the College of Idaho in Hermiston, Oregon on October 26 at 4:30 p.m.
