Late Goal Not Enough for Lady Argos in CCC Playoffs

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A fog fell on both the field and the Lady Argo's season, as the top seeded team in the Cascade Collegiate Conference knocked UGF out of the playoffs in a 3-2 Argo loss.

While the Carroll College Fighting Saints came into the match as the top seed, and UGF entered at the bottom of the bracket, the two squads played to a 0-0 tie in their regular season matchup.

The Saints ended that scoreless trend almost right away, scoring on a free from 35 yards out in the seventh minute. They continued to dominate possession for the next 30 minutes and then scored again on a controversial goal in the 37th minute.

The goal came on a deep, arching shot that UGF goalkeeper Kyra Dorvall caught just underneath the crossbar. While the Lady Argo defenders petitioned for an offside call, the line judge was instead eying Dorvall and the ball. He ruled the ball crossed over the goal line when the UGF keeper took a step back to keeper her balance after catching the shot.

Despite protests from the Argo players and bench, the goal would stand and put Great Falls down 2-0.

Instead of letting the frustration get the best of them, the Argos used the energy to their benefit. Just two minutes later substitute forward Jessica Watts got on the end of a cross from senior midfielder Lauren Ozdowski and finished from eight yards outs.

The Saints answer back even faster, taking advantage of a failed UGF clear to score in the 40th minute. At the time, the goal felt like it could be a backbreaker for the Argos.

A thick fog began to fall on the field as the second half began and, outside of a few Carroll shots, UGF began to dictate play. With about 25 minutes left in the game, UGF head coach Brian Clarke, moved senior captain Ashley Todd from her usual position of center back up to forward.

While it took Todd a few minutes to get into the flow of a more offensive mindset, her presence made an impact in the desperate UGF attack. In the 87th minute she outran two Saints defenders to a deep ball from freshman midfielder Sarah Howell and chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper.

With new life, the Argo comeback effort became more frenzied but the Carroll was able to keep the ball in the UGF end of the field for a vast majority of the final three minutes.

UGF outshot Carroll 5-2 in the second half and had the period's only two shots on goal.

The loss ends the Lady Argo's season after qualifying for the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs in the program's first year in the conference. The team finished the year with a regular season record of 5-5-5 and an overall record of 5-6-5.
