GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The beginning of conference play saw Lady Argos soccer put up a tough fight against Corban College, the preseason runner-up in the Cascade Conference, losing 3-2 despite playing a player down for the final 40 minutes of the game.
UGF was able to threaten the Warriors net throughout the first half but it was Corban that struck first in the seventh minute. Great Falls looked to answer with a series of aggressive counterattacks and one finally found the back of the net when a centering ball for junior forward Jessica Watts finding freshman Sarah Howell. Howell broke free from the defender at her side and chipped the ball over the sliding keeper to even the score.
Early on in the second half, the task in front of the Argos become significantly more daunting. A Corban forward broke free into the box and the UGF keeper, Brandi Wegerle, stopped the attack but not without committing a foul that earned her a red card and the Warriors a penalty kick.
The PK went in to make the score 2-1 and Corban capitalized again four minutes later off of a free kick from the right wing. After that, the Argos settled back down and found ways to be aggressive despite playing shorthanded.
Junior midfield Ashley Klepec returned from an injury to make dangerous runs up the left wing and also worked back to help defensively. Her hard work paid off in the sixty-ninth minute as her hard, shallow cross into the box found sophomore Alejandra Guzman to bring the team within one.
UGF's aggression did create some quality counterattacks for the Warriors but substitute keeper Kyra Dorvall, who finished with four saves, was up to the challenge of multiple one-on-one looks against Corban players.
The Argos will have a 24 hour turnaround to recover, as they play conference foe Northwest Christian University at home on September 19 at 2 pm.
