GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's hockey team took the ice for the first time ever at the Great Falls Ice Plex in front of a thundering crowd. The Argos and Tetons finished their skirmish in a 5-5 draw on Friday night.
The Tetons got on the board first with 7 minutes of play remaining in the first period to take a 0-1 lead.
Providence responded to tie the game as
Jeron Hirschfeld and
Leo Felt delivered the puck to
Erik Gatson who netted the shot to tie the game 1 all in the first.
The Argos took the advantage after 7 minutes of play in the second period after
Cody Hendrickson sent the puck to
Josh Larson who connected with the goal to give the Argos their first lead of the match, 2-1.
Less than two minutes later, Williston State tallied a goal of their own to tie the game up at 2-2 halfway through the second period.
Williston State tacked on another goal in the 12
th minute of the period as they retook the lead to make it 3-2.
The Argos were not going down easy as
Kyler Mack and
Trevor Checketts delivered a puck to
Parker Hanson who beat the goalie one on one to tie up the match for the third time at 3-3 heading into the break.
The Argos flexed their muscle less than two minutes into the final period of regulation as Hanson repaid the favor to Mack to notch their fourth goal of the game and take the lead back at 4-3.
Providence maintained the momentum to tally some insurance in the 7
th minute of the third period as Hirschfeld and Hendrickson delivered a puck to Larson who scored his second goal of the match to push the Argos to their largest lead of the match, 5-3.
Williston State responded in the 8
th and 11
th minute of the period to bring the deficit to one and then tie up the match at 5 all. Neither squad tacked on another run to end regulation tied at 5.
The Argos nearly scored in overtime, but the goal was not awarded, and the two teams didn't connect on another shot to end the match in a 5-5 tie.
The Argos were much more efficient during the match as they scored five goals on 36 shots, while the Tetons notched their five on 56 shots.
