Great Falls, Mont. - After a dominant performance in the University of Providence men's basketball season-opening tournament, the Frontier Conference named
Zaccheus Darko-Kelly the conference player of the week.
In the Argos' two wins over the
University of Lethbridge and the
University of Calgary, Darko-Kelly averaged 25 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals a game. He was 12 of 25 (48 percent) from the field including 5 of 13 (39%) from beyond the arc and 21 of 22 (96%) from the free throw line.
"He did a little bit of everything," head coach
Steve Keller said. "He scored, he rebounded, he made free throws, he blocked shots, he had some steals, he took charges. If there was close to playing a perfect game, he did it. He filled the stat sheet. That's what he's capable of doing."
The weekend's games were the first games of organized basketball that Darko-Kelly had played in a year. He was forced to sit out last season after transferring from Montana Western.
"You would think it would take him a little while to adjust," Keller said. "He sat out that year and he worked hard and improved his game. He's bigger, faster, stronger than he was a couple years ago and he's been hungry so he's excited he gets to play."
Darko-Kelly and the Argos (2-0) will next take the court on Saturday against Providence University College & Theological Seminary on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but has been moved to Saturday evening.
