Argos Look to Gain Momentum at Home Classic

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence will start off the Bill Himmelberg Memorial Classic on Friday morning with a 12 p.m. game against Northwest. They'll face off again versus Northwest on Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Argos (3-1) are coming off an 86-63 victory over Corban University. The Argos showed tremendous strides from the previous weekend, in which they barely lost to a top 10 team in Vanguard University.

"Losing is a roadmap on what you need to do to get better," head coach Bill Himmelberg said. "We were a little frustrated with how we played that weekend. We didn't think it was what we could do. We looked back and made some adjustments. I really like where we're at now after learning from those games. It's a big part of us moving in the right direction."

"We got back on track with what we needed to do playing with our style and being able to dictate our will onto somebody," he said. "That's really what we're focused on and I think we did a really good job."

The Argos filled the stat sheet against Corban. Four players scored in double-figures, led by Bailey Cartwright with 20. Emilee Maldonado dropped 17 points and eight assists, Parker Esary dropped 14 points and seven boards, and Jenna Randich dropped 10 points. Maldonado also went 5/5 from three-point land, propelling her to being named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week.

The Argos realize they have a steep road ahead of them. They've scouted Dickinson State (2-2) multiple times, as they've already faced Montana State – Northern so far this year. Himmelberg is also expecting a contingent to travel down from Havre, as a couple girls play for the Blue Hawks.

"They really like to shoot the 3," Himmelberg said. "They run a motion offense where they're really looking to shoot 3s. They can put it on the floor too. They have a couple kids from Havre so they have some Montana ties. They got good players, they're a solid team. We're going to have play well and really defend the three-point line."

On Saturday, the Argos will face Northwest (1-2). Though their record isn't great, they'll return several players back from injury when they take on the Argos.

"We follow Northwest really closely," Himmelberg said. "Ken is a great coach. He's done a great job over there. They've had some injuries early in the year. They're going to be returning some of those players back against us and they're going to be ready to go. They've struggled a little bit so far but that's because of the injuries. They are a lot better than they look on paper right now. We're going to have to be ready to go."

The Argos will kickoff both days of the Bill Himmelberg Memorial Classic, with both games scheduled for a noon tip off. Montana-State Northern will play in the 2 p.m. on both days. At 4 p.m., the men's teams will take over, with Montana-State Northern playing the 4 p.m. games. The University of Providence men's teams will take on the afternoon slate.

"We prepared for both teams earlier in the week," Himmelberg said. "It's nice having noon games because you just get the games out of the way. We don't have to sit around all day. It should be exciting and fun. It's going to be a fun weekend. It should be good."
