MANDAN, N.D. – Following a rough 6-1 loss last evening, the University of Providence men's hockey team defeated the University of Mary with a game-winning goal from
Levi Anderson with 37.8 seconds remaining in the third period.
"I'm still riding the high a little bit," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "We showed up and played hockey tonight. I think it was good to us what happened yesterday. We knew that we were capable of competing and playing a good hockey game. We stuck to our game plan and stuck to our system. We showed a lot of poise tonight and obviously got a break there at the end."
The Argos were the first to reach the scoreboard when
Cody Hendrickson scored off the assist from
Levi Anderson with 5:08 in the first period. The Marauders responded minutes later off the goal from Andy Huber. The score remained the same until Anderson's goal in the third period.
"Hopefully this game teaches us that it's a matter if you're going to compete," Heimel said. "What are you going to do when you make a mistake? I thought we were much better defensively and had a chip on our shoulder. We were focused and ready. You hope that your team will respond like they did tonight. We did tonight and I think that shows what kind of team we are."
The Argos have one more game left on the road trip. They'll face off against Dakota College of Bottineau tomorrow at 12 p.m.
"We're going to enjoy this one tonight, but we know there's no easy nights," Heimel said. "We've taken teams lightly earlier in the season and lost. Hopefully the lessons we've already learned helps out tomorrow."
