BOTTINEAU, N.D. – The University of Providence men's hockey team rode the momentum from their big win last night, defeating Dakota College of Bottineau 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
The game was a tight one until the very end. The Argos got on the board first from
Taylor McCall's power play goal off
Levi Anderson's assist with 7:41 in the first period. The Jacks responded almost immediately to even it up going into the second period.
The Jacks took the lead with 12:55 minute left in the 2
nd period when Daniel Nomestad found the back of the net. The Jacks held the lead for nearly 10 minutes until
Jamison McLain scored off the assist from
Erik Gatson. Moments later,
Jakob Stevenson scored off the assist from McCall to reclaim the lead.
In the third period, the Jacks had several opportunities for goals, but good play from goalie
Jacob Fry held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.
"I thought we played well," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "Bottineau did a good job of bottling us up. They played well defensively and we couldn't quite break loose offensively. We couldn't score, but we hung on.
Jacob Fry played well there at the end. He made some good saves there at the end."
Heimel was pleased with the mental toughness his team demonstrated throughout the weekend, especially after an ugly 6-1 loss to Mary on Friday night.
"It was a mentally successful weekend," Heimel said. "We obviously wish we played better in that first game, but we responded mentally and took out the top team in our division the next night. It showed how tough we are and it sets out a good pace for the rest of the season."
The Argos will next hit the ice against Montana State in Boseman on January 17
