GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #2 ranked University of Providence men's hockey team will look to continue its recent success when they travel to #17 Williston State this weekend.
The Argos (17-6-2), who recently retained the #2 ranking in the ACHA Division II rankings, are coming off a successful two weeks. In five games against #1 Mary, #3 Montana State and #9 Dakota College of Bottineau, the Argos went 3-1-1.
"We're getting better every week which is what you want," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "You don't want to see them trending the other way. The fact that we're improving every week is kind of important. You want to peak into the postseason and not be falling off. I'm encouraged by the energy."
As the postseason creeps closer, Heimel has talked at length with team about areas they can improve on. In practice this week, Heimel has stressed the importance of taking advantage of power plays.
"For the amount of skill we have, our power play hasn't been as good as I've wanted it to be," Heimel said. "We've proven that we can keep goals off the board, but with the amount of shots we're putting up we need to score some more goals."
The Argos face off against #17 Williston State (9-16-1) on both Friday and Saturday in North Dakota this weekend. The Tetons are a storied program that is fighting to stay alive for playoff contention.
"They're well-coached," Heimel said. "At the end of the day, they are playing teams tight that are teams that we play tight. I think if we play our game then we'll compete well and the result will be favorable for us. You can't take any game lightly, especially when you're playing against a good coach that can make adjustments."
"If you don't play hockey and play it well, it's going to affect you," he said. "Any game right now is like a postseason game. This is a playoff game this weekend. Next Saturday is a playoff game. You have to come in expecting to win games at this point of the season."
