Argo Spotlight: Shaver Shines in the Community

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Anyone that watched the University of Providence volleyball team this past season knew that senior Kelsey Shaver was a force to be reckoned with.

The 5'9 outside hitter had one of the most unbelievable seasons in Argo history. The senior from Scots Valley, Calif. recorded 443 kills, 4.47 kills per set, and 310 digs. Her kills per set a single-season program record, and her 443 kills is third most for a season in Argo history (and eight short of the 451 she recorded as a junior.) She was named a NAIA All-American, the Frontier Conference Player of the Year and led the Argos to a NAIA National Tournament appearance.

Yes Argos fans know what she can do on the court. What they might not know however, is that she's been just as successful off it.

Shaver has been involved behind the scenes in the opening of Luna Coffee Bar, which opened today (Nov. 5)  at 7 a.m. Hired as the manager in August, she has been involved with the nearly every aspect of the opening, including design, construction, purchasing equipment, flow planning, hiring and marketing.

Her involvement with the coffee shop is part of an internship she received that's required for a business degree from Providence. Shaver, who is planning to graduate in the Spring of 2021, was interested in business and had heard good things about the business department at Providence.

"UP made it an easy choice for me," she said. "I heard about the business program and the teachers and how awesome they are. I'm really happy with my experience there and I'm really happy I fell into the business world."

The coronavirus pandemic was a whirlwind for Shaver to navigate. She was on spring break when the University made the decision to complete the semester online. She spent the first few months in her hometown in California catching up with family and friends.

"It was really nice for me to go home and spend that time with my family and finish up online," she said. "It's been nice in the sense that it's freed up time that we wouldn't necessarily have had with our family and friends and focus on what's important in life."

She then moved back to Great Falls this summer before beginning work with Luna in August. She cites her education from Providence as a helpful guide during the process of opening.

"It's been a really sweet transition because I'm seeing stuff that I learned in my classes and actually getting to apply it to real life and this real business that we're opening up," she said. "I've been there since we started. It's been an amazing experience and my degree has really helped me."

University of Providence head volleyball coach Arunas Duda said he's not surprised to see Kelsey achieving so much so quickly after stepping off the volleyball court.

"She's a very charismatic leader," Duda said. "She's someone that people like to follow. When she puts her mind to something, she definitely gets it done. With this business, she's done a lot of work in creating it and getting it going. She has a tremendous work ethic, a lot of character, is someone loyal that you can trust. She's going to go a lot of places in life."

Luna Coffee Bar opens today, Nov. 5, and will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. They are located at 9 5th Street North. You can visit their website, https://www.lunacoffeebar.co or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
