Sanchez Named Athlete of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Frontier Conference announced Monday that University of Providence thrower Jillian Sanchez is the Conference Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.

Sanchez, a junior from San Bernardino, California, placed in the Top 10 in two events this past weekend at the Myrle Hanson Open in Spearfish, South Dakota. Sanchez placed fourth in the women's weight throw with a throw of 15.40 meters and eighth in the women's shot put with a throw of 11.29 meters.

"I'm happy that she was able to get this award," assistant coach Alan Cress said. "It's well-deserved. It was a solid performance all-around because it was a shot put and a weight throw. Those were two solid performances."

Cress was enthusiastic about her performance because her weight throw of 15.40 meters is roughly 18 inches away from the national qualifying mark. Her shot put mark was also extremely close to her personal record.

"We're hoping that that's a spring board for the weight throw to break that national qualifier mark," Cress said. She has two meets left so she's in good position."

Sanchez and the rest of the indoor track and field team will compete at the Montana State Open this Friday.
