GREAT FALLS, Mont. – After
missing three games due to Frontier Conference COVID-19 policies,
the #10 University of Providence men's basketball team will return to the court this weekend with a pair of home games against Montana State-Northern.
"It's good to be able to compete again," head coach
Steve Keller said. "Hopefully we didn't get too out of shape over this period. I believe we'll be ready to go on Saturday."
The Argos (6-0, 6-0) have gotten off to a hot start on the season, winning all six of their games to start the season. Keller credits that to his team's ability to defend for long stretches and to share the ball on offense.
Five players on the team are averaging double-digit points per game, led by
Preseason All-American Zaccheus Darko-Kelly at 17.2.
Marcus Stephens is averaging 13.7 ppg,
Davien Harris-Williams and
Cap Uzan are averaging 11.7 ppg and
Jaxen Hashley is averaging 11.2 ppg.
Darko-Kelly is off to a hot individual start averaging a double-double with 10.2 rpg. He's also averaging just under six assists a game. He's shooting 44.2% from the field, 42.3% from beyond the arc and a whopping 96.0% from the free throw line. He's currently fifth in the nation in free throw percentage, seventh in defensive rebounds per game (8.7), eighth in blocks per game (2.3) and ninth in assists per game (5.8).
Dawson Fowler is currently sixth in the nation in assist to turnover ratio (4.3).
The Argos will go up against an aggressive defensive team in the Lights (5-4. 4-4), who are coming off a pair of wins against Rocky Mountain College last weekend.
"Northern is always solid," Keller said. "They're going to guard hard on defense. They got some really good players that are capable of putting up 20 on you. We have to be able to guard them. They're going to try to control tempo on us we're going to try to speed it up a little bit on them."
Because the women's games were canceled, the men will move up to the 5 p.m. time slot on Saturday. Their game on Sunday will tip off at 2 p.m.
