CORVALLIS, Ore. – Three players from the University of Providence women's soccer team were named Honorable Mention All-Conference on Monday.
Dani Chang,
Tihanee Freitas and
Justine Humphry were
all recognized by the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
"It's very exciting," head coach
Heather Blandford said. "It's not only a good compliment to those players but to our team. I think getting any kind of individual awards are representative of the effort that the team has put forward. I couldn't be more proud of our group and of course the three individuals that were recognized. It was a team effort."
Chang was instrumental in the attack for the Argos, leading the team in both goals (2) and points (5). The midfielder was aggressive offensively, taking 17 shots on the year, eight of which ended up on target.
"Dani was the engine of our midfield," Blandford said. "She's technically a very gifted player and she has good vision on the field. She was a big piece of us creating opportunities on the attack. More than that, there was a confident that she gave our team. When she had the ball our team was comfortable, our team was confident."
Freitas was also recognized by the CCC. The senior switched positions before the season, moving from outside back to center back out of necessity. She was the defensive leader of a solid backline for the Argos. She is also stout academically, as
the CCC named her Academic All-Conference earlier in the season.
"T is phenomenal," Blandford said. "She is an outstanding leader. There was a chunk of the season where we were playing really, really good soccer, and that had a lot to do with her leadership. We had a young backline but having her voice back there, her composure was so key to her success down the road."
Humphry was also a backbone of the Argo team, providing a dependable backbone in the net for the Argos. She recorded 71 saves on the season and is already sixth all-time in total history in career saves.
"She's incredibly calm under pressure, is a good vocal leader and a good communicator, and is extremely athletic," Blandford said. "She always has a knack for coming up for that big save that we need. She just gained the team's confidence right away, and when you have somebody like that in the net that you can rely on start to finish, it drives the energy of a team. She's young but she's already a phenomenal leader for this team. Her future is very bright."
