GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's hockey followed up last night's 8-2 victory over Dakota College of Bottineau with another victory Thursday evening, this time 6-4.
The Argos got two quick goals to start off the game; one from
Cody Hendrickson and the other from
Huntley Hinz. The Jacks responded with a goal with 6:54 left in the first to cut the lead. The Argos scored two more goals early in the second to expand the lead to three, but the Jacks responded with two more goals later in the second to cut the lead back to one again.
The score remained 4-3 until
Jakob Stevenson found the back of the net off the assist from
Kyler Mack. The Jacks made it interesting with a goal with two minutes left, but
Will Wright scored a goal on an empty net with 27 seconds left to secure the victory.
"It's a big win," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "Obviously the fact that Bottineau was a highly ranked team means that this game had high playoff implications. We knew that heading into it. To get two wins and to finish strong in a game that was kind of up and down today, that was pretty exciting."
Though the team was ahead the entire game, Heimel was pleased with how his team responded when the Jacks made things close.
'We responded," Heimel said. "Our response when we got a goal was really good. That's the mark of a good hockey team. You don't always win a game 8-2. You've got to be able to deal with the blows and keep going."
Heimel gives a lot of that credit to goalie
Jacob Fry.
"He played so great," Heimel said. "He allowed us to stay in the game and when we had some lapses in momentum and penalty and undisciplined moments. He was just big."
The win, in combination with last night's, has massive playoff implications for the Argos. The Argos are currently ranked #18 in the National Rankings, which would have them missing the National Tournament. The Jacks are ranked #6.
"For the longest time, it's not that we ever doubted things, it just seemed like the goal was so far away," Heimel said. "It was difficult there for a while. It seems like we're finally back on track with what our goals are and that's to win a National Championship. It seems like we picked up where we left last year when it all got pulled from us."
The Argos will look to continue the two-game winning streak on their upcoming road trip. They'll travel to Bismarck, N.D. to take on top-seeded University of Mary on March 22.
