CORVALLIS, Ore. – Six student-athletes from the University of Providence softball team were named Academic All-Conference by the
Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Ashlee Anderson (biology),
Brie Clifford (counseling),
Peyton Elliott (sports management),
Taylor Mathews (education),
McKenna Montgomery (forensic science) and
Jaelena Trujillo (exercise science) all received the recognition. To be recognized as an academic honoree, a student-athlete must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and at least have a sophomore standing academically.
"I'm proud of them," head coach
Joey Egan said. "This year especially with how hard it is to be traveling so much and having online school in the fall. I'm proud that they could push through and persevere in tough times when things aren't exactly normal."
Egan is especially proud because the six of them not only contribute in the classroom, but also are key components of the team on the field.
"These six are not just players, they're impact players," Egan said. "That is a huge feat to be so dedicated to your sport and also be dedicated to the books and the academic side of things. They are leaders on and off the field for our team. Other girls look up to them. They set the bar high and give us expectations for the future of the program."
The Argos will travel to Eastern Oregon to take on the Mountaineers in a triple-header on Friday. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. MTN.
