HELENA, Mont. – The University of Providence completed the second day of the Frontier Conference Championships on Friday in Helena, Mont.
The men's team finished third with 74 points, while the women's team also finished third with 92 points. Combined, the University of Providence finished third with 166 points. Carroll won the event with a total of 581.
"Our kids competed hard," head coach
Tony Arntson said. "For as young as we are, for our kids to get in that environment and that atmosphere and compete like they did, I was very impressed."
McKenzie Clark was the headliner as she was named the Frontier Conference Champion in the javelin throw (42.22 meters). The throw was the seventh longest throw of anyone in the nation this season, and is enough to qualify for Nationals, which will take place in two weeks in Gulf Shores, Ala.
"She went from barely missing the B qualification to making the A qualifier and is now seventh in the country," Arntson said. "Four of her six throws were really good. She's got two weeks to train and has a chance to be an All-American. That's very cool for her."
Chapman also had a successful javelin throw, tying for second with a mark of 29.21 meters.
The Argos also got the top two hammer throws on the women's side. Allyson Connor won the event with a mark of 45.82, with Jillian Sanchez right behind her at second with a mark of 45.29.
"Allyson had a great, big personal record in the hammer," Arntson said. "She was so happy. She had a great cheering section of students. It was pretty cool to see."
Sanchez also had a dominant discus throwing, winning the event with a mark of 39.29 meters. Connor finished third in the event with a 35.43 meter throw. Sanchez also excelled at the shot put, finishing second with a throw of 11.84 meters.
Jaden Foster was on fire on the track, winning both the 100 meter (11.03) and the 200 meter (21.96).
Justin Kabbenhoft finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a 1:02:09.
The Argos 4x100 team of
Logan Robinson, Foster,
Joe McMillan and Kabbenhoft finished second with a 49.30. The Argos 4x400 team, featuring Robinson, Krabbenhoft,
Sage Wanner and Foster finished second with a time of 3:32:88.
Nash Grafe,
Joe McMillan, Connor Murgel and Wanner got third in the 4x800 with a time of 9:08:68.
On the jumping side,
Dawson Fowler finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.9 meters. He also finished second in the triple jump, finishing with a 13.66 meter mark. Fowler also finished third in the long jump at 6.59 meters.
McMillan also finished the day with a third-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.85 meters.
"I thought our kids competed very well," Arntson said. "We had a lot of personal records. For being young kids and being in that atmosphere for the first time, they did a great job."
