LA GRANDE, Ore. – Two players from the University of Providence softball team were
recognized by the Cascade Collegiate Conference on Thursday.
Taylor Mathews was named 2
nd Team All-Conference while
Peyton Elliott was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
"I'm very happy for both Taylor and Peyton," head coach
Joey Egan said. "They both were very consistent and reliable for us this season. They worked very hard and it clearly paid off for them both this year. I'm very proud."
Mathews had a strong season in the batter's box, ranking fifth in the conference in batting average with .436. Mathews led the Argos in runs, hits, RBIs, on base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles and triples. In 101 at-bats, the center fielder recorded 44 hits, brought 26 runners home and scored 23 runs herself. She recorded 11 doubles, three triples and two home runs and only struck out four times on the season.
"I'm so proud of her for getting second team," Egan said. "I think she earned and deserved something a little bit more but 2
nd Team is a great honor. She also is such a great person. She is universally loved by her teammates and had such a positive influence on our team this year."
Elliott also was a consistent batter for the Argos this season. She recorded 33 hits this season, bringing 18 batters home. She led the team in home runs with four, and was second behind Mathew's in batting percentage (.375), slugging percentage (.614) and on-base percentage (.427).
"Peyton had a great season for us as well," Egan said. "She was very reliable for us at the plate. She's very deserving of this honor and I'm really happy for her."
Though two players received the award, the coaching staff believes there were multiple players that were qualified to receive All-Conference recognition. Most are returning next season, which gives them a good building block for the future.
"We had four players that very easily could have been on that list," Egan said. "We have some good pieces that are returning to us next season. We'll lean on them next year as we look to make a splash moving forward."
