GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's soccer team will take their first conference road trip of the season this weekend when they travel to Washington to take on Northwest and Evergreen State. The Argos (0-4, 0-1) will take on the Eagles (2-5-1, 1-1) at 4:00 p.m. MTN on Friday before taking on the Geoducks (0-5-1, 0-2) at the same time on Saturday.
"It's going to be fun to play some new faces," head coach
Heather Blandford said. "They're in our conference, but they were on the other side of the division last year so we haven't played them in nearly two years. I'm really looking forward to both games."
The Argos opened conference play last weekend with
a home match against Rocky Mountain College. Despite the loss, the Argos did respond well to some early adversity, topped off by a goal from
Dani Chang in the 76
th minute.
"We're trying to find our confidence a little bit," Blandford said. "We're understanding that we've been working and building on those little things each and every game up to this point to continue to improve. The foundational things, the simple things. Those will take us to the end result."
The team has spent the past week working on ball control as a unit. The Argos are ranked 16th in the nation in shot percentage at 23.5%, so if they can control possession and take advantage of their offensive efficiency, good things will happen.
"We've been getting some confidence back with the ball on our foot," Blanford said. "Where we're running into trouble right now is our confidence once we win a ball. We want to keep that ball and possess it. We want to focus on that confidence piece as an individual and a team. We're fully capable of that, we just have to remind ourselves that that's something that we are good at."
Both the Eagles and Geoducks will pose a formidable challenge for the Argos. The Eagles split their games against Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon last weekend, while the Geoducks dropped both games.
"We're expecting two good, competitive matches," Blandford said. "We're really focusing on ourselves and making sure that we're working on the little things that we've been working on in training so that we can find that success. Both teams are going to be good tests so we have to come with our A game. We have to get off the bus. We have to be ready to go to compete both of them."
