GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #10 University of Providence volleyball team will play their first home game of the season on Wednesday in a match against Montana State-Northern. First serve will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls. The game will also be a whiteout, with fans encourage to wear white in support of the Argos.
For the Argos, it will be the first time the program has played in front of fans in 684 days, when the 2019 squad defeated Montana Tech to
win the 2019 Frontier Conference Tournament Championship.
"We haven't played in front of a crowd at home in nearly two years," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "I know there's a bunch of high schools coming to watch, our own students are excited to watch. I've talked to faculty and staff and people in the community who are excited. I don't think there is any way you don't get up for this game tomorrow night."
The game will be a rematch for the two teams,
who faced off in Havre, Mont at the Frontier Conference Preseason Tournament ten days ago. The Argos (14-2, 1-0) defeated the Skylights (10-8, 0-1) in four sets.
"They serve tough and defend really well, so they definitely make you earn your points," Duda said. "They put up a solid block in front of our outsides and slowed them down a little bit. We started making a bunch of errors on our side when we last played them. If we can play a cleaner game on Wednesday and make sure we take care of the ball on our side, I think that should lead to success."
The Argos have been rolling as of late. The team is currently in the midst of a seven-game winning streak, with their last loss coming
at the hands of #12 Bellevue on Sept. 10.
A lot of that success can be traced back to the defense of the Argos, who currently rank third in the nation in digs per set (19.44). A lot of that can be credited to returning
All-American Sacha Legros, who averages 5.7 digs per set. The Argos also rank 17
th in the nation in kills per set (13.23) and assists per set (12.39).
The Argos are coming off a
win over #15 Montana Tech in their first conference game of the season. Though they won, the game revealed some areas that the Argos need to improve on.
"Every time you play a match you kind of unveils a new list of things you have to improve on," Duda said. "Our team is so knowledgeable, we're able to focus on really specific things. We're able to go a layer deeper."
The Argos have had two good days of practice, and will hope those game-like scenarios will pay off.
"I know they'll be hungry and I know they'll be ready," Duda said. "It should be a good battle. The atmosphere should be pretty electric. It should be a pretty fun college volleyball match. If people want to come, it's a good one to go to."
