GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey team will return from break looking for revenge against a pair of top ten teams this weekend.
The Argos (6-3), who
are ranked third in the ACHA Division II West Region Rankings, will host the top-ranked University of Mary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Great Falls Ice Plex. The squad will then return to the ice on Saturday in a matchup against #10 Williston State. Both teams have defeated the Argos earlier in the season.
"You look at those two games, we were a bit unstructured and tried to go out and do our own thing and we fell short on a number of levels," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "We're excited. We'll start with Friday night and then focus on Saturday but both teams we have a history with. Those games hurt last time and we're ready to redeem ourselves."
The team will have had a month-long break by the time the team takes the ice on Friday, having last played on Dec. 5
against Montana State. Heimel is excited to come back with a fresh outlook on the season, and says the practices so far have been positive.
"I think mentally and physically, when you tie December games in with finals and other additional stressors for the players, they benefited from the break," he said. "There's a new pep in their step since they've been back. And it was good for me to be able to go back and look at those games and see how we're doing in various areas. I reflected on whether our game plan needs to be the same or different moving forward so I think that was helpful."
The squad will have their hands full on Friday night as the top-ranked Marauders (20-4-2) come into town. The two teams met on Oct. 29, with the Argos
falling to the Marauders 6-1.
"They're deep, they're fast," Heimel said. "You can't give them opportunities inside the house. We need to make sure we have numbers back against them. We need to be patient and not abandon our game plan if things don't go well early in the hockey game. They're a good team and they're experienced. We just have to stick to the game plan. We have to respect that they're good and not hold on to our sticks too tight."
The team will also be looking to exact revenge on the Tetons (7-12) who
topped the Argos 5-3 on Oct. 30
th.
"I'm not sure how it went down but the last time we played them, we didn't play our best hockey game," Heimel said. "We're capable of a much better effort. Before we get into any pre-scout stuff we need to recognize that we're capable of a heck of a lot better of a hockey game than we did last time. The focus will be more on our own efforts than it is anything else in that game."
