Argos Fall to Cougars in Overtime

2/11/2022 9:40:00 PM

OGDEN, Utah – The University of Providence men's hockey fell in overtime to BYU 5-4 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament Friday night in Ogden, Utah.

Down 4-3 with two minutes to play, Will Wright found the back of the net for the Argos off the assist from Cooper Page to tie the game and force overtime. Under new ACHA rules, the team competed three-on-three until either team scored. After ten minutes of back and forth action, the Cougars found the back of the net, securing the victory and advancing to the conference championship game.

"We started well," head coach Jeff Heimel said. "We played alright but we just got outworked. That's the bottom line. They brought waves of pressure and we got exhausted. Somehow we kept ourselves in the game after going down. We scored with a minute left to tie the game to force overtime. It just wasn't enough."

The loss sends the team into the 3rd place game, which will take place at 6:45 Saturday night. The Argos will take on Weber State in the matchup, a team they defeated 6-1 earlier in the season. The team will hope to use the game as an opportunity to improve before the ACHA West Regional Tournament.

"I told them that this is either a massive wake-up call and it's the best thing that happened to us this year and makes us stronger, or our season is done in three weeks because we can't figure it out," Heimel said. "This loss was sobering. To get knocked out by a team that's maybe not as skilled as us but laid it all out there. That's a message right there. If we don't come in and work on top of our skill we're probably going to lose. I think there's opportunity to up our level of play. We're a little bit vulnerable and we need to address that cause we're a talented team that can make a deep run. Or we don't change and a couple weeks later we're on the golf course. It's one or the other."

The team will take some time to rest and recover tonight, before reconvening in the morning to prepare and watch film prior to the game.

"The first thing we do is relax for a minute," Heimel said. "We need to let the emotions settle. We're going to have breakfast tomorrow and after we'll have a meeting to address it. The film associated with that game is invaluable. We're going to want to take a look at that. We just need to get better."
