GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team will travel to Klamath Falls, Ore. this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against the #2 team in the nation, Oregon Tech. The first game will begin April 15 at 3:00 p.m. MTN.
The team is coming off a jam-packed last two weeks, in which the team played a total of 10 games in eight days. The coaching staff decided to emphasize recovery this week in practice as the Argos (2-26, 1-19) prepare for one of the top teams in the nation.
"With the snow and the grueling week we had last week, we had less intense practices than normal," head coach
Joey Egan said. "They were pretty laid back, skill-specific practices with a lot of hitting focus and pitching focus. This opportunity to give them a longer break was good for them."
The Argos will hope to continue their improved play at the plate as of late. The team had generated only game of over 10 hits prior to their series against Corban two weekends ago – since then the team has generated 10 hits six times.
"We were playing from behind quite a bit and now we're catching up to ourselves," Egan said. "We're continuing to improve on us. We want to make sure we're growing and getting better each game. Coming into the weekend we want to continue to hit the ball well knowing that we're facing one of the best in the nation."
The Owls (34-7, 19-2) have been dominant this season, but are 2-2 in their last four games. They are coming off a tight 2-1 loss against #9 Southern Oregon University.
"They're very disciplined, both offensively and defensively," Egan said. "They have some depth in their pitching and have some hitters who are very, very good. We've played the Griz, we played SOU we have a good idea of what we're up against."
The Argos however are confident themselves after a productive week of practice.
"We plan to keep our focus on the little things and growing and recovering every single pitch," Egan said. "It's a game of errors and a game of failures. We're going to make mistakes. On any given day any team can beat any other team. We have to come into it with a relaxed confidence that we have nothing to lose and only things to gain by winning."
