Box Score 2 PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team picked up two wins against Warner Pacific Saturday in Portland, Ore.
The Argos (4-31, 3-23)
held onto their lead from Friday, where the second game of their doubleheader was suspended due to heavy rain, defeating the Knights (6-33, 4-23) 10-7. The Argos kept up the pressure in the second game, scoring six runs in the first inning en route to winning 9-4. The fourth game of the series was canceled.
"It feels good," head coach
Joey Egan said. "They never gave up. They kept fighting and putting runs up on the board. I thought we played very solid."
After entering the game up 9-7 in the top of the sixth, the Argos added one run when
Ryen Palmer singled to center field to bring home
McKenzie Staats. Neither team could muster a run the remainder of the game, allowing the Argos to tie up the weekend series.
The Argos recorded 16 hits over the course of the game, with
Taylor Mathews,
Sirena Rosalez and Staats all notching three.
Karlie David led the team with four of the squad's nine RBIs.
McKenna Montgomery got her first win of the season, allowing two earned runs and recording a strikeout.
The squad continued their momentum into the next game, scoring a total of six runs in the opening inning. After holding the Knights scoreless in the bottom of the first,
Macy Mangold added to the lead with a two-run shot to left field to give the team an 8-0 lead.
The Knights cut the lead to four over the next three innings, but a single from Staats down the left field line brought Mathews home to make it 9-4. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
Mathews and Staats led the team in hits again in the second game, each accounting for three of the team's total of 14. Mangold and Rosalez both recorded two RBIs while Mathews crossed the plate three times.
"The first game we lost yesterday we had a lot of errors," Egan said. "Today we cleaned those up. We didn't let them put a lot of people on base."
Egan also was impressed with the weekend that Staats had. The catcher went 9-for-14 from the plate over all three games, finishing with one home run, four RBIs and two doubles.
"It just felt like she couldn't get out," Egan said. "She came in clutch with runners on base. She just led the field behind the plate and kept everybody going strong. She was a true leader on the field this week."
The team will return to Montana for a six games next week in the final week of their season. The team will travel to Carroll College on Tuesday for a doubleheader before returning for a home series against College of Idaho on Thursday.
