Argos Prepared for Home Opener Against Rival on Wednesday

4/5/2022 3:32:00 PM

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team will play their first games on their home field this week. The Argos (1-21, 0-15) will host their rival, Carroll College on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

"We're really excited to play on our home field," head coach Joey Egan said. "It's going to be great to play games at home, against another team in Montana and support softball in the state. Carroll is always really tough because they're a rival. Anybody can win on any given day."

The Argos are coming into this matchup with some momentum, having defeated Corban in the final game of their four-game series last weekend. The team generated a season-high 21 runs last weekend, and hopes to use that momentum as they prepare for their rivalry game with the Fighting Saints (9-21, 6-12).

"We had more discipline at the plate last weekend," Egan said. "We put the ball in play more than we had in the other games. They also had an energy and a support from one another and that was really good.

Because of the six game schedule this week, the coaching staff has prioritized rest and recovery this week. They have spent a majority of the week working on their pitching to prepare for the pitching from Abby Hanley, who has recorded 93 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA this season.

"She's very good on the mound," Egan said. "If we can get on her early on, then we'll be sitting pretty good. The biggest key is going to be recovery. We're going to make mistakes, they're going to get hits, we're going to get hits, errors are going to happen. The team that can recover the quickest and most efficiently will come out with a win in the end."

Following Wednesday's games, the squad will then have a quick turnaround as they prepare for Northwest for a full four-game series. The first game against the Eagles (10-24, 7-13) will begin on Friday at 2:00 p.m.

"Northwest has taken a few big games from some big teams," Egan said. "We don't want to look past them. We've had some good battles with them over the years. They've come up really big a few times this year already so we won't overlook them for sure."
