GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #24 University of Providence volleyball team faces another tough test this week, facing off against Montana Tech this weekend. The teams will take each other on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday afternoon match at 1 p.m.
The Orediggers (2-2, 2-2) are coming off a weekend sweep against Montana State-Northern. The Argos (2-2, 2-2) meanwhile, are coming off a weekend split against Rocky Mountain,
defeating the #18 Battlin' Bears on Friday night before
falling in five Saturday afternoon.
It's a completely different team than what we've seen so far this season," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "They're really big. They have big, tall long kids that jump really well. It'll be a better block than we've faced versus Rocky and we struggled with that at times. If they're going to be in system all night we're going to be in trouble. If we can get them out of system and play as good as defense as we have the last two weeks, that'll definitely help us out. It's going to be another challenge."
Despite the known challenge that Tech presents, the Argos have spent the week mainly focused on themselves. In both double-headers this season, the Argos have won on Friday night before falling on Saturday night. The coaching staff believes the Saturday games are a combination of fatigue and self-inflicted errors, and they've dedicated the week to fixing that.
"We're more focused on ourselves," Duda said. "I thought in that fifth set versus Rocky we made a ton of errors. They are all things that we can fix. We've gone back and watched a lot of film, watched a lot of film with players, corrected a lot of things."
Despite the errors, there are plenty of positive to build off of. The squad has been staunch defensively, ranking second in the nation in digs per set (25.4). A lot of that defense has been because of libero
Sacha Legros, who currently leads the nation in digs per set (8.4). Finberg-Roberts is also having a solid start to the season, winning two straight Frontier Conference
Setter of the Week awards, and ranking 6
th nationally in assists per game (10.7). Freshman
Sadie Lott has also been a bright spot for the Argos, recording the highest amount of kills in each of the team's four games.
"I think we're slowly but steadily improving," Duda said. "Week by week, there's little things that each game will reveal to us that we still need to work on and improve on. We just go back to practice and keep getting reps. I like where our team is, I like how we're progressing. We're definitely not there yet, we're not close, but I love the path that we are on."
