GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team will get an opportunity to cut down the nets for the second time this season Tuesday night when they take on Carroll for the Frontier Conference Championship.
The #10 Argos (16-2, 15-2) won the
outright regular season conference championship and clinched a #1 seed for the playoffs. They
defeated #4 Montana State-Northern on Saturday night to advance to the championship game.
"It's awesome for our program to be in this position," head coach
Steve Keller said. "Winning the league was one of our goals and we did that. Another goal was to win the conference championship and we got a chance to do that."
The Fighting Saints, the #2 seed in the Frontier Conference Playoffs, defeated #3 Montana Tech on Saturday to advance to the championship. Carroll is one of the two teams who defeated Providence this season, defeating them 74-68 on Feb. 14. The Argos had won the three previous matchups against the Saints prior to that loss.
"We've played each other four times," Keller said. "We're on our fifth game. They know us, we know them. We'll watch the film on what they're doing and see if there is a couple of adjustments. We just have to show up and play."
Carroll is a stout defensive team, ranking 3
rd in the nation in rebound defense (29.4) and 8
th in scoring defense per game (65.0). They're also a threat from the three-point line, ranking 7
th in the nation at 40.9%.
The Argos will have to continue to contain Shamrock Campbell and Jovan Sljivancanin. Sljivancanin is averaging 18.0 points and a league-leading 9.4 rebounds a game, while Campbell is averaging 14.7 points and 3.2 assists a game. Campbell is also 2
nd in the nation in assist/turnover ratio at (4.9).
"They're two of the best players in the conference," Keller said. "We have to do a better job on Shamrock that we did that last game when he had 27 points. Jovan is going to be a tough matchup. Our key with them the last game was offensively. We didn't play well on offense. Part of that is they're defense. They're the top defensive team in the conference. We just have to guard them a little bit better and we have to score a little bit more. Players have to make plays."
The Fighting Saints will have their hands full as well. They'll have to contain
Zaccheus Darko-Kelly, who is leading the team in every statistical category. The Argos have five players who are averaging double-figures (Darko-Kelly,
Marcus Stephens,
Cap Uzan,
Davien Harris-Williams, and
Jaxen Hashley) and the ability to score points in bunches. As a team, the Argos are deadly when they get to the charity stripe, shooting 81.3%, which is second in the nation.
"We have to play well on both ends of the floor because they're going to play well on both ends of the floor," Keller said. "It should be a great championship game."
The game will tip off Tuesday night at 7 p.m. No fans will be allowed into the gymnasium due to the Frontier Conference's
No-Spectator Policy. Fans can watch for free on
www.upargos.com or on SWX.
