GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's hockey team will have a chance to build upon their recent momentum when they take on #4 Montana State this weekend.
On Friday night, the #2 ranked Argos will travel to Bozeman for a game that will be broadcast on television across the state on SWX Montana. The puck will drop at 7:30.
"Anytime you get that type of coverage it's pretty cool," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "It's great obviously for the promotion of our program and getting the word out there that as a fairly new program that we have a hockey team. I'm excited about it."
The Argos (16-7) will hope to impress the influx of viewers as they ride a current hot streak. After
dropping a game last weekend to #1 Mary on Friday, the Argos responded fiercely,
defeating the Marauders the following night 2-1. The next day,
Providence defeated #7 Dakota College of Bottineau 3-2.
"We learned what happens when we take nights off," Heimel said. "I thought maybe we could have been more prepared as a staff in general as well as the team. We learned that we were resilient. We came back with some vengeance that next night. They came back and it was great."
Saturday's game, which was won by
Levi Anderson's go-ahead goal with 37 seconds left, was one of the most memorable games in Heimel's coaching career, he said.
"Games that are being played in the heat of the moment that could go either way are just fun," he said. "We played good hockey, they were playing good hockey. When the guys are ready to go and they're playing their best hockey, we play really well. It was the first time all year that it was just this really good back and forth hockey game. We missed that a little bit so that was fun."
The Argos haven't spent the week celebrating however. Since they've been back in Great Falls, they've started to focus on the 4
th ranked team. The Bobcats are led by Ryan Padden (15 goals, 22 assists) and Zachary Lane (20 goals and 16 assists).
"They have good forwards," Heimel said. "They're well-coached. We're continuing to reinforce not giving up anything crazy on special teams. We do well in five on five hockey games. It's a road game obviously so we're trying to keep crowds at bay. We want to play a simple hockey game and not try to do to much."
That road environment will only be short-lived. Saturday's game will be played in Havre, Mont for a neutral site game. However despite the abnormalities of the weekend, Heimel and the Argos are as prepared as ever.
"It's cool the game on Friday is being broadcast and it's cool that we're going to head up to Havre," Heimel said. "It doesn't change what we do and how we prepare. It's business as usual. I'm just excited."
Friday's game will be available statewide on SWX Montana and the Watch SWX App. It will replay on Sunday around 3pm.
